Tricky Archive

archive of animated works by female and/or genderqueer artists

The International Animation Film Festival Tricky Women Tricky Realities highlights the transformative power of storytelling at the intersection of art and gender justice. It consistently engages critically with the (in)visibility of female-specific and/or genderqueer life realities and their artistic representation.

In the context of amplifying underrepresented cinematic perspectives—and motivated by the desire to establish opportunities to networking, educate, and generate platforms not just occasionally but in a long-term and sustainable way—Tricky Women Tricky Realities has launched the Tricky Archive – archive of animated works by female and/or genderqueer artists.

The archive serves as the foundation for preserving and curating the cinematic work of women and/or genderqueer artists in animation. Beyond functioning as a resource for diverse research as well as artistic and cultural work, the archive aims to be a repository for the future of art and film history, a witness to feminist discourses, and a space for continual reinterpretation and engagement.

As an archive, the project collects and organizes part of the festival’s film collection (compiled between 2001 and 2025), and through the development of a collection-specific tagging system, enables a feminist perspective on animation art and its history.

Since May 2025, the archive has been accessible for curatorial, artistic, and academic work, research, and cooperation at the Tricky Women Tricky Realities festival office, upon request and with support from festival staff.
