Fri, 04. 3., 17:30Sun, 06. 3., 17:30

Duration: 55 minutes

Curated and presented by Julie Roy, executive producer at The National Film Board of Canada

Evelyn Lambart is undoubtedly the most important of the pioneers in Canadian animation. Hired by the National Film Board of Canada in 1942, she was immediately assigned to work on mapping projects. Then, from 1944 to 1965, she collaborated with the founder of the NFB’s animation studio, Norman McLaren, with whom she co-directed five films. Afterwards, she focused on her own work, making six short films that are notable for their charm. Few retrospectives have been made about her over the years. This, then, is an opportunity to pay tribute to the tremendous value of her work

Development in long-range travel and the growing importance of the Arctic and Antarctic regions make it necessary to understand how maps may be misleading. Experiments with a grapefruit illustrate the difficulty of presenting a true picture of the world on a flat surface and it is concluded that the globe is the most accurate way of representing the earth.

An experiment in pure design. Lines, ruled directly on film, move with precision and grace against a background of changing colours. The images are accompanied by American folk musician Pete Seeger.

This short tempts the eye with gradually unfolding yet increasingly complex movement, colour and sound. Reminiscent of the mid-20th-century style of Op Art, the film follows a single tiny square as it divides and multiplies, eventually forming a colourful, hypnotic mosaic set to the animators’ precise and deliberate musical orchestration.

The directors painted colours, shapes, and transformations directly on to their filmstrip. The result is a vivid interpretation, in fluid lines and colour, of jazz music played by the Oscar Peterson Trio.

A wordless plea for the right of all living creatures to a clean, unpolluted environment. With rich colour and intricate animated motion, the film features birds, butterflies and other woodland creatures succumbing to air pollution caused by human inventions.
