About Us

“Tricky Women Tricky Realities, screening works by female and genderqueer artists, aspires to the fantastical vision, ‘to imagine a world that is different from the one we currently live in."

- Vicky Smith, Animationsfilmkünstlerin

For 25 years, the festival has centered feminist perspectives in the world of animated film and cultural work, holding an important position within the international festival landscape. Besides multiple competition programs and programs featuring up and coming animators, the festival presents curated programs, retrospectives, and various discursive formats, creating space to engage with innovative art from Austria and around the world while fostering a community around it.

Tricky Women Tricky Realities wants to emphasize the transformative potential of animation, engaging with works and artists that rearrange familiar structures of storytelling, that speak to present-day urgencies, while imagining new languages for collective engagement as well as alternatives to the world as it exists today.

“The strong suit of animation film practice(s) is that in being freed from the bounds of the material world, we can open a space for the possible in lieu of the physical and remind audiences that there are alternative ways to engage and articulate tricky realities.”
