Noémie Marsily was born in 1983 in Belgium and since then, she engraves, paints, draws images that move most of the time. After studying illustration at St-Luc Brussels, she published her first book with the collective Nos restes: Fouillis Feuillu in 2010. In 2013, she published a second comic book, Fétiche, with Les Requins Marteaux, and more recently Memet (scenario Isabella Cieli), with l’Employé du Moi.

In parallel, she has directed several animated shorts in duo with Carl Roosens, produced by Zorobabel, including Poodle (2010), Around the Lake (2013), Mosquito (2014, with Canal+) and I don’t feel anything anymore (2016, with the NFB). Her artistic practice has been evolving for several years through projects and encounters, between comics, illustration, animated film and teaching. Ce qui bouge est vivant (Whatever moves is alive), produced in solo, 2022, is an intimate and poetic self-portrait, with which she won the three-month residency at the MQ at Tricky Women/Tricky Realities 2023.

During her residency at MQ, Noémie Marsily will be doing writing and graphic research for a graphic novel (or perhaps an animated film). The project is an autofictional romantic comedy about a 40-year-old neuro-atypical single mother. She has recently discovered that she is a mermaid, and is trying to put her best foot forward in a brand new romantic relationship with a human. The characters evolve in an absurd and poetic world. It is still unclear whether the artist will develop this story as an animated film or as a graphic novel. Marsily has many ideas that she needs to write down and draw in order to organize them and find the best formal approach for the development of this story.
