Empowerment mit Animation – Wider den Backlash

Vorträge und Podiumsdiskussion zu Animation & Dokumentarfilm, in Kooperation mit dok.at

13:00 Uhr: Joan Ashworth: Locating Sylvia Pankhurst: Throwing light into the archives to vivify the seen and be informed by the missing.
My lecture will examine traces of the life and political campaigns of suffragette and artist Sylvia Pankhurst. Using research from the International Institute of Social History and other sources I have surveiled an account of her life. Through taking part in recent feminist marches and lobbying campaigns I have begun to understand Sylvia and her work more deeply through my own actions. Sylvia has inspired me to join a political party, and to volunteer for community and politically engaged projects. She has transformed me as I have explored and animated her archive. My lecture will share my knowledge emerging from this research so far.

Joan studied filmmaking at the NFTS and co-founded 3 Peach Animation where she directed the opening for Tim Burton's Batman 1 and many commercials. Through Seed Fold Films Joan directed How Mermaids Breed, 2002, Mushroom Thief, 2010, and Eggs Fish and Blood 1999. From 1994-2015, Joan headed up the internationally renowned Animation Dept. at the Royal College of Art, London.  She lectures internationally on Animation and Visual Writing. She is currently in production of an animated documentary on Sylvia Pankhurst.

14:00 Uhr: Katrin Rothe: Cut-Out & Revolution
My approach to animation from a documentary perspective, based on my film 1917 – The Real October: Animation is a wonderful means to highlight, comment on and, sometimes, express an opinion on social realities. To think in visual concepts and abandon the classic division into storyboard and script. Taking a real figure such as the legendary salonnière Zinaida Hippius as an example, I demonstrate the development of a real character who does not fit into any conventional concept of animation.

Katrin Rothe studied Experimental Film Design at the Berlin University of the Arts and at the CMS in London from 1992 to 1998. She has been a freelance animator since 2001 and a filmmaker since 2003, focusing on documentary films with animated sequences. She lives and works in Berlin.

15:15 – 16.15 Uhr: Panel: Documentary & Animation: mit Joan Ashworth, Katrin Rothe, Betina Kuntzsch („Halmaspiel“), Lauren Orme („Bird In A Cage“, „Newport Gun Girls“), Daniela Praher (dok.at), moderiert von Daniela Ingruber.
