The fusion between sound and movement is inherent in the field of experimental animation. Sound becomes equivalent to narrative as the carrier of moving images. 
Director Rachel Gutgarts and musician and sound designer Aviv Stern will talk about the making of the TRICKY WOMEN/TRICKY REALITIES festival trailer and share insights into their workflow and how it has evolved over the past five years of creating experimental animation together.

The discussion will revolve around artistic dialogue in their common work and further ideas regarding co-operation between visuals and sound in art and film.

What is happening in the French animation world? This talk offers a sneak peak of the major initiatives such as the French association for animated films (AFCA), schools, fundings, residencies, including some open to international professionals.

Brazen: a book-to-screen adaptation of an international bestseller

With Brazen, a 2D animated TV series (30 x 3min 30sec), directors Mai Nguyen and Charlotte Cambon adapt the best-selling graphic novel Culottées, Des Femmes qui ne font que ce qu'elles veulent (Brazen, Rebel Women who rocked the world) by French author Pénélope Bagieu (who received the Eisner Prize in 2019), which shines light on 30 women — some well-known and others less so — whose determination, boldness, and strength changed the times and societies in which they lived.
(3 Parts of “Brazen” will be screened within the Competition & Bonjour France 2 Program.)

Charlotte Cambon will discuss the TV series which illustrates the lives of women such as an Apache warrior, a Hollywood star, a lighthouse keeper, an astronaut, an empress, and many others through animated short episodes. Anonymous or well-known, each revolutionary in their own way, these women wrote their own destinies, changed the world and tore down prejudice: Hedy Lamarr, a Hollywood actress and producer who invented the technology which led to today's Wi-fi, Annette Kellerman, a record-breaking swimmer from Australia who designed the revolutionary one-piece swimming costume, or Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian social worker and peace activist who received a Nobel Peace Prize.

The series will be broadcasted in France starting March 2020 on France Télévisions channel. 

Director Charlotte Cambon will address the challenges of the adaptation and her collaboration with co-director Mai Nguyen: identifying the right structure, graphic style, rhythm, directing. How to find the right balance between Bagieu's original work's style and tone, and the specificities of TV storytelling. How to visually translate 4 to 10 pages of comic strips into 3min 30 sec episodes, with all the technical possibilities and the language offered by 2D animation.

Animation as Tool to Destroy the Patriarchy

This lecture will outline an understanding of patriarchal oppression in linguistic and philosophical terms, and suggest an antidote that we can find in animated images. There’s something very oppressive about reality, where the world appears as if it could be no other way. The strong suit of animation film practice(s) is that in being freed from the bounds of the material world, we can open a space for the possible in lieu of the physical and remind audiences that there are alternative ways to engage and articulate tricky realities.

Female* characters in film define the perception of women* and men* in society. Role models beyond traditional stereotypes offer different perspectives and encourage critical thinking in a world of diversity. It is important to create opportunities for artists who think beyond the stereotypes and support them in the process of creating, pitching and realizing their stories.
